How to Make the Most of your MEETINGS

Posted: 1/6/11 by Betsy Garrett

Strategy is really the foundational principle of Orange (that’s why we often refer to our philosophy as the “Orange Strategy”). One of the most overlooked ideas in leadership is the importance of meetings – maybe we already consider ourselves experts on this topic because meetings already take up a lot of time on our schedules! In reality, it’s important that our time is spent in purposeful and productive meetings with the right people.

So we’ll be looking at two themes this month: controlling your own schedule (instead of letting it control you) and scheduling consistent meetings with your team to keep everyone on the same page.

This month on Fridays- we’d love to highlight your favorite tips and tricks to having a better meeting. Maybe it’s a new technology or maybe it’s something you do to get everyone back on track. Share your ideas in the comments of any post this month and you might be spotlighted on Friday Favs!

We know that you lead in several ways at any given time. You lead yourself, you lead volunteers, you might lead a staff, and you often lead up. So here’s what we have in store for you in our premium You Lead content. We will follow also be talking about the same topic here on the always free Orange Leaders blog. If you have the Orange Leader Handbook- this focus is from p. 45- Consistent Meetings.

A BOOK REVIEW on The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working by Tony Schwartz.
This new release takes a hard look at how leaders and employees are expending their energy as well as how we are RECOVERING our energy.

A PODCAST Interview with Matt McKee and Jeanne Stevens.
Jeanne Stevens has to keep her schedule under control in order to keep her priorities in check. In addition to having two kiddos, Jeanne and her husband recently started Soul City Church in Chicago, Illinois AND she’s an author, speaker, and one of the lead pastors.

A VIDEO of Anne Jackson.
Anne’s a church leader and an author who’s experienced burnout and come back from it. Check out what she has to say about being a leader and remembering that your schedule is only a piece of paper or a lot of pixels. You’re the one that gets to drive it…not the other way around.

A REAL LIFE Case Study of Southwest Airlines.
Whether or not Southwest Airlines flies out of your nearest airport, we all have lots to learn from their organization. Take a look at the way they organize their entire scheduling and meeting processes.

As a BONUS: STAFF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT.
We’re including another book review with this portion of YouLead because we felt that it would be a great tool to reinforce this month’s topic.

BOOK REVIEW:
Orange Revolution by Adrian Gostick & Chester Elton
Not only does this book have a fantastic title, it also has some pretty good information in it as well! We all want high-performing teams, and there are lots of ideas to help you reach that goal; such as motivating team members, trust among your team, leadership at all levels and recognizing successes.

A CHALLENGE for your next big Meeting:
Pull out your calendar and schedule an upcoming staff meeting to discuss this topic with your team. We’ve already done the legwork of brainstorming creative ideas to engage your team and questions for challenging everyone to discover how your organization can take one more step in the right direction. Won’t it be great to have a strategy for the time that you spend with these great folks?

Last but not least, a SENIOR LEADERSHIP PODCAST Interview with Jeff Henderson & Gavin Adams.
Jeff has made a career of organizing teams. He’s the campus pastor for Buckhead Church in Atlanta, Georgia and his team is one of the most productive groups around. Listen in as they talk about the value of having effective and consistent face-to-face time with the most important leaders in your organization.

REAL MINISTRY: Redeemer Church – “Global Involvement”

Posted: 11/17/10 by Orange Leaders

We’re back with another quick installment from Sam Luce at Redeemer Church in beautiful Utica, New York. Sam is the children’s pastor at Redeemer and he is giving us an update on how his organization is at promoting Global Involvement among their families. It’s a tricky subject and you’ll probably identify with some of the struggles that Sam brings up.

“Global Involvement” is the topic we’re focusing on this month in the YouLead curriculum. Be sure to check it out!

Let’s Talk About “Global Involvement”

Posted: 11/3/10 by Orange Leaders

It’s a new month here at OrangeLeaders.com, and the topic we’ll be discussing this month is Global Involvement. It’s the perfect time of year to be considering how you can provide opportunities for small groups and families to serve the community both locally and globally. We are excited about sharing ideas with you, learning from your experiences and participating in conversations about getting parents and their kids to serve together.

WHAT HAVE YOU TRIED TO GET FAMILIES TO SERVE TOGETHER?

HOW ARE SMALL GROUPS ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN SERVICE PROJECTS?

Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 18, because we’re going to be answering your questions here on OrangeLeaders.com. Submit any questions you have about the topic of Global Involvement in the comments below, and we’ll answer them in a video that we’ll post right here (well, not right here, but in a new post….you get the idea). So go ahead and ask…

As if you were there Orange Tour notes

Posted: 10/28/10 by Orange Leaders

If you’re not able to get to the Orange Tour, these notes will almost make you feel like you were there. Long post, but full of great details and Orange-isms! Thanks to Keith Tusing, who regularly blogs at CMBuzz.com

Ok, I’ve just arrived at CCV (Christ Church of the Valley) in Phoenix, AZ. It is an incredibly beautiful day with clear blue skies and the temp at a wonderful 65 degrees. CCV has an amazing campus with their children’s building being their latest addition. It is one of the premier churches in the Valley of the Sun and a great choice for them to be hosts for Orange Tour Phoenix.

Our meeting is being held in the youth building which has all the tech bells and whistles to make the experience first-rate. As you enter the building you notice the over-sized comfy coaches to your left and the snack bar to your right. This is where a very smooth and painless registration takes place. Once we’ve checked in we receive a copy of Reggie’s new book Parenting Beyond Your Capacity. If you haven’t read it I would highly recommend that you and encourage your parents to get a copy for themselves.

Once we enter the conference room you see a stage flooded with Orange – surprising isn’t it. The first thing I notice on the stage is the shelving unit littered with several framed family photos – it will become apparent how these are key to today’s discussion. Center stage is a white wooden board with Orange light bulbs spelling out Think Orange – which I’m sure most of us do on a daily basis.

As the program begins Reggie confesses to being a Metro-Sexual and as proof he lets us know he shops when he is stressed. Not sure if that is enough to qualify him for the Metro-sexual label? But the benefit to those in attendance is that he was shopping for gifts to give away to the crowd. After apparently spending his evening in the Scottsdale mall the gifts include shoes, baby clothes, and more. Of course all have the color Orange incorporated into the attire.

Next, we are treated to a video recording of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody performed at the Orange conference. Of course the lyrics have been changed and the song now recognizes the volunteers in a very light hearted way. This was one of the highlights of the Orange Conference and also of the tour.

Reggie, Carey & Sue now begin to share the five issues that drive what Orange is about:

Strategy – a plan of action with the end in mind – you have to be intentional about getting everyone on the same page

Message – how you communicate what is important to the next generation – how it’s packaged determines whether or not it will be heard – teams should wrestle with their messaging – 40 hours makes everything you teach incredibly important!

Community – a belief that one of the greatest gifts that you can give to a child is to put another adult in their life that will communicate the same things their parents are saying – organize your ministry in such a way that consistent adults in the lives of kids.

“If you’re not putting consistent adults in the lives of kids you’re not discipling them.”
They will have a much better chance of having a dynamic faith.

Influence – setting up a life where they are created and designed to fit into a greater story – they should have a sense of mission – attending a program and being the church are two different things – the church is about who I am and who I am influencing
Family – how do we synchronize and partner with parents? If we do not engage the family we will always struggle –

Our potential to influence the next generation is linked to what we think about the family. What needs to change to engage families?

We must recognize that some people are influenced by the church – Everyone is influenced by Family

Somewhere along the way we developed a picture of what we think family should look like. The “stock family picture” isn’t real and doesn’t tell the story of what’s really taking place. 23.5% of families in the United States are defined by married couples who live with their own biological children.

If you hold too tightly to the ideal picture you set yourself up to be disillusioned.
The stories of the real families that Reggie shared were moving and help to point out how we need to adjust our thinking about family. What do the real families do from where they are now? A new vision of how to reach and minister to families is needed!

Dysfunctional Bible Families:
Adam & Eve
Noah
Jacob & Esau
Joseph
David & Basheba
Joseph & Mary – forgot Jesus in the Temple – CPS would have a field day with that one.
There are no scriptural models of the perfect family in the Bible.

God doesn’t use perfect pictures, He uses broken people. God desire is to work through every family to demonstrate his story of restoration and redemption. God is at work telling a story of restoration and redemption through your family. Never buy into the myth that you need to become the “right” kind of parent before God can use you in your children’s lives. Instead, learn to cooperate with whatever God desires to do in your heart today so your children will have a front-row seat to the grace and goodness of God. Parent Beyond Your Capacity

It is a Story not a Picture – God has a story that he wants to write in your life

Families don’t need a better picture, they need a bigger story.
a. The Better Picture Approach
b. The Bigger Story Approach

When you approach parents from a “bigger story” perspective you expand the potential to influence their children.

We are surrounded by a multitude of families who don’t see the church as a viable option.

“The only reason I (Reggie) came to Phoenix – I don’t know your story but I know a lot of us are sitting here holding broken pieces. Throw them away – let God take you and work through a restoration process that will tell His story to families everywhere.” The hope for our families is churches that will say it’s not about a picture it’s about a story of redemption and restoration.

In three words this first session of the Orange tour: Emotional – Powerful – Challenging.

Strategy (Session 2)

Posted: 4/29/10 by Beth Nelson

God’s plan is not to make you happy, but to have an intimate relationship with you.

He never promised your life would be easy.

He did promise that He could use the circumstances of your life
to help you understand His love for you
and His love for those around you.

The leaders in the Bible were willing to collide …

with different cultures
with tough truths
with new ideas
with hard situations
with impossible odds

because they trusted that God was up to something in their personal lives
and in the world around them.

That’s why it made sense one day when Jesus stepped onto this planet to clarify our highest calling and said,

“Love the Lord your God
with all your heart
and with all your soul
and with all your mind
and love your neighbor as yourself.”

What if your mission as a leader is as simple as this?

To lead yourself and others to love God

What is your strategy for doing this?

[Strategy = a plan of action with an end in mind]

What are you doing to grow in your relationship with God?
What are you doing to help others grow?
How have you seen God use the unhappy circumstances in your life to help you understand His love?
Who do you know who is
effectively leading others toward God’s love? What can you learn from that person about strategy?

We really do want to hear your story – send it in.

Up Close Conversation with Reggie (Part 2)

Posted: 4/2/10 by Reggie Joiner

Today’s video of Reggie Joiner starts with him bantering and bragging about a reverse “punking” during Catalyst with Brad Lomenick. For the first time at Catalyst West, (the week before Orange Conference on April 28th-30th), Reggie will be one of the main communicators, sharing his passion for churches to partner with families and their communities from a different stage.

In these short six minutes, Reggie focuses on the strategy- how all the pieces of Orange- help transition kids (and their parents) through different ages and stages in the church. He talks about the stewardship of a life- what an amazing phrase. Another thing Reggie got excited about was the progression of Orange Leaders over the last year and how leaders are beginning to share and network in this space. Besides partnering with churches and families, Orange has also started to develop academic partners, like Baylor University, so we can continue to learn from others who are researching, as well as encourage ministers these institutions impact to begin with a different mindset, rather than reThink things later. At the end, Reggie admits that it’s much easier to connect with him through Facebook than email. Ask to be his friend- he answers all of his Facebook messages personally- so that he can give his daughter a hard time about having more friends (even though she was the one several years ago that helped set up the account).

The next best thing to Live Chat

Posted: 2/12/10 by Cara Martens

We’re looking to our Orange community to talk about questions asked during the webcast. We would love for you to add your thoughts and experiences to make the conversation a brighter shade of Orange. It was amazing to watch leaders from all over answering and encouraging each other to multiply influence and reach the next generation. Leaders love to share and help others. Here’s a thread from yesterday to build on–

@henryjz: knowing that churches are different, what is the timeframe we should be expecting to get staff on same page?  ballpark figure
@johnsonrn: I’d say 6-12 months.
@drunge:  It took my church 2 years to flip the culture.

We love how David Scott customized and elaborated on the Think Orange Group Blog Project hosted by Elemental Children’s Ministry to show his Orange process and timeframe (6 years total!). He refers to pg. 236 at the back of the Think Orange book to a concentrate originally written by Orange leader, Carey Nieuhoff (who’s a lead pastor in Canada and guest blogs here often). To figure out which of Carey’s steps you are on or where you might be stuck, look at these Steps to Orangify:
1. Discover
2. Define an action plan
3. Communicate
4. Reorganize
5. Develop
6. Promote
7. Launch
.

Where are you in the process of creating an Orange culture at your church? What do you realize about trying to “Orangify” that you’d like to share with others?

Orange Tour in Orlando!

Posted: 1/27/10 by Bre Hallberg

Wish you all could have been there as Orange Tour finished up yesterday. Over 300 leaders gathered in Orlando and listened eagerly as Reggie encouraged leaders to evaluate their current systems and make changes to remain relevant to the students and children in their ministries. Sue Miller and Kevin Ragsdale led breakouts where leaders were given the opportunity to ask specific questions related to preschool, children and student ministry.

They were given a sneak preview of the upcoming companion book to Think Orange, where they were able to examine the 5 Essentials, as they relate to their own ministries. Leaders left encouraged, knowing they had other leaders to network with and excited to see how God could use them to influence the next generation.

Search Twitter for #orangeweek and #reggiejoiner to follow the buzz. Which lines are the most “retweetable” in your mind? Let’s encourage other leaders by spreading the word and giving them some food for thought!
